As the cooler days roll in, everybody needs a cosy spot to retreat to at the end of a long day. With many of us working from home, it’s especially important to create a comfortable space in which to spend our days. We’ve drawn on our years of elevating interiors from ordinary to exceptional and rounded up a few of our favourite tips to turn your home into a haven this winter.
1. Play with lighting
Nothing changes a room’s atmosphere as drastically or effectively as lighting. Opt for warm bulbs (2700K to 3000K) over white ones and see an instant change. No dimmer? No problem. The right lamps serve as both a decor piece and a source of light, showing off the details of your living area and adding a touch of flair to your space in their own rite. Elegantly placed candles are unmatched in the ambient lighting department, and they also happen to have your back if loadshedding happens to roll around again!
2. Reconsider your layout
You don’t have to replace your furniture to spruce up your space. Rearranging what you already have has the power to completely change up the vibe. Choose a focal point – perhaps a plush couch complete with striking scatter cushions and a cozy throw blanket, or a mid-century sideboard beneath the TV, finished with leafy pot plants and interesting trinkets. Arrange the rest of your furniture with this as your focus, choosing complementary colours to create a seamless flow. Consider traffic, make sure you’re using the right sized rugs (the bigger, the better, and we love layers too!) and make sure your tables are within arm’s reach for ease of access.
3. Heaven’s in the details
A set of good looking coasters and a basket of knitted throws can be enough to leave you wanting to linger in your living area for far longer than before. A framed art piece provides your guests with a fun talking point and a thriving houseplant or two breathes life into a wintry space. Consider each of your senses when you’re upgrading your home – burning incense or investing in a sweet-smelling diffuser can make the world of difference. How do you want to feel when you sit down on the couch after a long day of work? Tailor your space accordingly.
4. Let your walls do the talking
We might be a little biased, but nothing brightens a room like a bold feature wall. Make sure it reflects your personality and that you love looking at it, and you’re a-for-away! Life is simply too short not to bring joy into your life by upgrading your interiors to suit what’s unique to you. A subtle textured wallpaper brings immediate warmth to your walls.
We can’t wait to help you turn your home into a haven. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to change your space into somewhere where you find yourself wanting to spend your weekends. Prioritize the details, and let your walls do the talking this winter.
